The Season
The 2012 vintage in Umbria was characterized by several odd weather patterns, including a long, dry, hot-spell.  The winter was mainly rainless and dry and spring bud break was favored by
mild temperatures, except those around the Easter holiday where low temperatures threatened frost.  From June to August Umbria experienced unusually dry and hot temperatures. However, in late August a summer storm dropped a half-inch of necessary rain to keep the vintage growing until harvest.  Despite conditions, the weather in August and September were favorable enabling the grapes to perfectly ripen and develop fragrant aromas. In addition, the hot weather enabled us to minimize spraying in the vineyards, lessening our environmental impact. 

The Vineyard
Castello della Sala Chardonnay was first produced with the 1994 vintage and is Marchesi Antinori’s second Chardonnay.  The grapes come from vineyards planted 656 to 1,312 feet above sea-level, in Pliocene sedimentary soils rich in marine fossils with some clay. 
Like its important sibling, Cervaro, it is produced at Castello della Sala, a 14th century castle, located 11 miles from the town of Orvieto, which was purchased by the Antinori family in 1940. 
The castle is an outstanding example of medieval military architecture and its micro-climate makes it ideal for the production of cooler-weather wines such as whites and Pinot Noirs.

The Process
The grapes are picked during the night and are immediately chilled to maintian varietal character.  After a few hours of skin contact, the juice was transferred into French oak barriques (Allier and Tronçais) where alcoholic fermentation and partial malolactic fermentation took place.  The wine was then aged in oak for five months after which it was blended and bottled.

The Experience
The wine is a brilliant yellow in color with greenish highlights. The aromatics feature tropical fruit, particularly pineapple, with notes of vanilla. Savory and mineral in flavor, it is soft and balanced with light oak notes, which blend harmoniously into the structure of the wine.

The Antinori family has been involved in the production of wine for over six centuries, ever since, in 1385, Giovanni di Piero Antinori entered as a member, the “Arte Fiorentina”, the Winemakers’ Guild of the city of Florence. Today the firm is run by Marquis Piero Antinori with the support of his three daugthers, Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia, directly involved in the work of the house. Tradition, passion, and intuition have been the three driving principles which have led the Marquis Antinori firm to become a leader in Italian wine.

Each and every vintage, each and every separate area, each and every idea which is to be put into practice is a new beginning, a new search for higher quality standards. As Marquis Piero Antinori likes to repreat: “ancient roots play an important role in our work. But have never been a limit to our innovative spirit”. The estates in Tuscany and Umbria, the historic patrimony of the family, have been joined, over time, by investments in other territories with an important potential for high level wine both in Italy and abroad, in places where it would be possible to begin working for a larger prestige and wider awareness of the family’s ability to produce outstanding wine.

The Marchesi Antinori firm expresses its passion for viticulture by a constant search for even the smallest areas for quality improvement. For this reason, continuous experiments go forward both in the vineyards and in the cellars, seeking new clones of local and international grape varieties, experimenting cultivation techniques, vineyard altitudes, fermentation practices an temperatures, modern and traditional fermentation methods, different types of oak for aging and different sizes and age for the casks and barrels themselves, and different aging times before their commercial release for the bottled wines as well.
