The Season
The 2010 growing season was characterized by low temperatures and frequent rains in the Chianti Classico production zone. Snow fell towards the end of the year and continued to fall up until mid-March.  The months of April, May, and June were rainy and temperatures were below the seasonal norm delaying vine development. The summer, which began with high temperatures in early July, together with generally dry weather contributed to an excellent development of the grape bunches and a recovery of some of the ripening time previously lost. Temperatures remained low in late July and early August. This, along with heavy rains, slowed down ripening and plant growth.  The Merlot grapes were harvested between September 10th and 20th. In this same period Sangiovese finished ripening thanks to cool nights and warm days that brought grapes to complete ripeness. The Sangiovese was picked during the last ten days of September. 
 From the moment in which the grapes arrived in the cellars and fermentation commenced, it was clear that the vintage was of high quality and the wines would have true varietal character and great personality.


The Vineyard
Introduced in 1988 with the 1985 vintage, Pèppoli Chianti Classico DOCG is the archetypal modern Chianti Classico. Pèppoli combines the complexity and structure of a well-aged Riserva with the fruity fragrance.  This style is made possible by a unique microclimate where east-northeast facing vineyards are planted in a small heat-retaining valley on mineral- rich, rocky soils that are perfect for growing very fruity, lively Sangiovese.  The wine further benefits from the use of better Sangiovese clones, discerning grape bunch selection, and delayed harvest when necessary.  The wine is produced on Antinori’s Pèppoli Estate, which extends over 247 acres, 136 of which are under vine.

The Process
The grapes were harvested, and the three varieties were fermented separately in stainless steel vats to preserve unique aromatic and flavor profiles.  After malolactic fermentation, 90% of the Sangiovese, Merlot and
Syrah were blended and placed into large Slovenian oak casks in order to preserve the fruity aromas from fermentation and sweeten the tannins. Ten percent of the wine went into American oak barrels which were used to complete the range of aromas.  After nine months of aging in oak, the wine was bottled and aged before release

The Experience
Ruby red in color, the 2010 Pèppoli is characterized by aromas of vibrant red cherry with inviting chocolate and vanilla notes from the oak aging. On the palate, the wine shows true Sangiovese character with soft and silky tannins and a long persistent finish.

Each and every vintage, each and every separate area, each and every idea which is to be put into practice is a new beginning, a new search for higher quality standards. As Marquis Piero Antinori likes to repreat: “ancient roots play an important role in our work. But have never been a limit to our innovative spirit”. The estates in Tuscany and Umbria, the historic patrimony of the family, have been joined, over time, by investments in other territories with an important potential for high level wine both in Italy and abroad, in places where it would be possible to begin working for a larger prestige and wider awareness of the family’s ability to produce outstanding wine.

The Marchesi Antinori firm expresses its passion for viticulture by a constant search for even the smallest areas for quality improvement. For this reason, continuous experiments go forward both in the vineyards and in the cellars, seeking new clones of local and international grape varieties, experimenting cultivation techniques, vineyard altitudes, fermentation practices an temperatures, modern and traditional fermentation methods, different types of oak for aging and different sizes and age for the casks and barrels themselves, and different aging times before their commercial release for the bottled wines as well.
