The Season
“Perfect, classic, abundant” describe the 2012 vintage. Quality and quantity were in great supply in the 2012 harvest. Beautiful Spring, Summer and Fall weather highlighted the growing season. With very few concerns, winegrowers and winemakers were able to sit back and allow Mother Nature to strut her stuff – and strut she did. The vintage was, literally, a mirror image of the classic 2005 vintage; climate-wise, yield-wise and quality-wise. Great aroma development, phenomenal extraction and unctuous flavors were the result of patience and creativity. Groth made some memorable wines from a spectacular vintage. It is one for the ages.

The Vineyard
The Chardonnay is made entirely from grapes grown in our Hillview Vineyards, located in the Oak Knoll District AVA, which was planted in 1996. The fruit from this cooler vineyard site provides the tropical fruit, citrus and mineral notes that complement food nicely.

The Process
All of the 2012 Chardonnay fruit was whole cluster pressed. This gives us juice with incredible fruit flavors and softness. After pressing and cold settling, the juice was transferred to French oak barrels, 25% of which were new, for fermentation and aging. After eight months of aging “sur lie”, the wine was racked off the yeast lees, blended and finished for bottling.

The Experience
Long, cool fermentation in a mixture of old and new barrels gives our Chardonnay layers of fruitiness and complexity that result in a wine that is very enjoyable when young or after several years of bottle age. This method of fermentation, in conjunction with whole cluster pressing and "sur lie" aging add layers of toastiness and creaminess to the wine. Together these components meld together harmoniously to create a balanced wine that is both lively and rich in aroma and flavor.

The Groth Vineyard & Winery story begins in 1981 when the founders, Dennis and Judy Groth were catching their dreams of owning a vineyard.  The couple was close to purchasing a vineyard in Sonoma County, but the lot didn’t grow Cabernet Sauvignon, so the two continued their search and landed in the heard of Oakville, California.

Some may say the Groth success is one of the right-place-right-time story, Dennis and Judy’s decision to pass on the vineyard that did not grow Cabernet Sauvignon that lead them to Oakville was a great one!  Groth’s first vintage,  the 1982 was instantly recognized, and with some fine tuning over 3 years, Groth’s 1985 Reserve Cabernet, scored 100 points by Robert Parker, a rare and prestigious accolade.

Today, under the leadership of winemaker Michael Weis, Groth wines are simple, elegant, and stay true to the integrity of the varietal.   Michael’s winemaking philosophy is simple, great wine starts from the ground, nurtured by it’s conditions and care, and showcase it in all it’s glory.
