The Season
The 2012 vintage was fairly typical for eastern Washington
 and a welcomed change from the cooler 2010 and 2011 vintages. Bud break started a little earlier than normal but cooler temperatures through the early summer delayed veraison slightly. A warming trend began in late July and dry conditions through mid-October were ideal for fruit ripening.

The Vineyard
Fruit were sourced from vineyards throughout the Columbia Valley, including the Horse Heaven Hills.  The terrior in Columbia Valley consists of loam-sand and gravel soil which is good for drainage, but holds less nutrients.  The vines are grown on the south-facing side of the hills, allowing for most sun exposure and better drainage.

The Process
The fruit was de-stemmed and gently crushed to either upright stainless steel tanks or rotary fermenters.  Crushed grapes were typically “cold-soaked” for 24-48 hours then warmed and inoculated with a number of yeasts, including Premier Cuvee, Prise de Mousse, ICV-D21 & ICV-D254, to initiate 7-10 day fermentations.  The wine was aged for several months in a combination of American and French oak barrels to soften and round the blend.

The Experience
The 14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon features aromas of blueberries and black currants with subtle hints of dried herbs and spice. Dark stone fruit flavors are complemented by a touch of cocoa and accentuated by fine and velvety tannins.
